Businesses, services and organizations from throughout Upper Providence Township will take the spotlight Saturday, Sept. 22, during the annual Community Day. Festivities get underway in the township’s Black Rock Park at noon and wrap up at dusk with fireworks.

The theme for this year’s event is Mardi Gras.

Musical performances are planned on the main stage from noon to night. Starting the afternoon off from noon to 2 p.m. will be Zydecoal. The Cajun/Zydeco band plays a mixture of country, rock, blues, reggae and Tex-Mex performed on accordions and rub boards.

From 2:30 to 4 p.m., The Mango Men will offer a Jimmy Buffett-style show. Zydeco-a-Go-Go will take the stage from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The Philadelphia-based band plays Zydeco, New Orleans rhythm and blues, vintage Louisiana rock and roll, 60s soul, big band jazz, jump-blues and swing.

The music concludes with Bayou Bandits, performing from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The Bandits focus on energetic Cajun music, with influences from blues, rock, country and Zydeco.

A variety of activities are planned throughout the day. A craft fair, noon to 6 p.m., is new this year, offering festival attendees an opportunity to browse or buy hand-crafted products. The business fair, from 1 to 5 p.m., will allow area residents to lean about the services and products offered by businesses in the community. Up to 50 vendors will fill the business expo tent.

A car show will feature classic cars and motorcycles from 1 to 4 p.m. The Phillie Phanatic will visit Community Day from 1 to 3 p.m. Wagstaff and Company will offer a children’s show with puppets and ventriloquism at 1 p.m.

Magician and balloonist John Cassidy will entertain the younger set at 2 p.m., while Ed Schmidt will continue the fun for children with a magic show at 3 p.m. Bingo will be offered from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a small entrance fee.

Throughout the day, visitors may encounter Judy Trudy the Clown, the man on stilts, and Hoola Hoop demonstrations.

Children’s activities include a Titan obstacle course, tropical landslide, rock wall, teen spin, mini golf, high striker, petting zoo and pony rides.

Professional food vendors will include Casual Gourmet, offering theme related food; French Quarter Bistro, jambalaya and Cajun; Hillbilly Barbecue, sausage, barbeque, meatballs and hamburgers; Li’l Red’s Kettle Corn, M&N Funnel Cakes, Petrucci’s Ice Cream and Water Ice, and Upper Providence Recreation, with pizza and hotdogs.

Community Day will be held rain or shine, but fireworks rain date is Sunday, Sept. 23. Parking is on-site or at Quest Diagnostics, just a short walk from the park.
