A musical Saturday is planned for this weekend in Spring City, as the Spring City Revitalization Committee hosts the second Music and Market Fest along Main Street.
The festival, set for Saturday, Oct. 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will celebrate the community, the new Streetscape and George’s Music’s 30th anniversary, according to Christina Turek of Christina’s Framing Shop, one of the event organizers.
A full day of music is planned, with outdoor performances on a stage in the parking lot at Spring City Hotel, as well as some indoor events at Chaplin’s: The Music Café. People are invited to “bring a chair and enjoy the music all day,” Turek said.
The event is free, she stressed, although food and craft vendors will offer items for sale, and the downtown businesses will be open. Main Street will be closed from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so there will be plenty of space for the many craft tables and other attractions. There will even be a dance group performing on the street, Turek noted.
Turek hopes to have a meet-and-greet session with artist Leah Marone, and works of other local artists will be on display. Among the featured artists will be works by Dot Weikel, she said.
Among the craft tables will be jewelry and “all the standard crafts,” Turek remarked, and other tables will feature baked goods, gyms, Mary Kay, face painting and more. Sly Fox will offer a beer tasting at Spring City Hotel.
“We really are gearing it for the community,” Turek commented. She stressed local participation is the key, and most of the tables, and even the gyms, are from Spring City, Royersford, Limerick and Collegeville.
Turek noted the community was even able to be involved in preparations for the festival, as businesses and residents joined together to physically clean the street on Wednesday evening.
Most of the entertainment features local performers, including many teachers, students and former students from George’s Music. The tentative lineup includes students of local teacher Fay Moreau; George’s students; the Spring-Ford Drama Club; George’s student Nathan Preiss and his band 23 West; former student John Roth and his band; Mike D’Orazio.
And, Creative Dance Steps; Grace Extreme from Grace Assembly of God; George’s student Danny Spada and his group; George’s teacher Pete Benes; the band Toxic Waste, featuring two brothers who are students, Billy and Matt Friedauer; the group Black Rock and the group Live Wire. There may even be a few surprises, said Tom Henderson of George’s Music, who is coordinating the music lineup.
The Music and Market Festival was first held in 2004, Turek explained, at which time it was expected to be an annual event. However, the plans for the Streetscape work delayed the festival’s return until this year.
