    Holidays arrive in Limerick

Children frolicked in a coating of fresh snow as grown-ups huddled in coats and blankets in the brightly lit pavilion at Limerick Community Park for the sixth annual Holiday Tree Lighting on Friday evening.

“Thank you for braving this cold night,” welcomed Karen Hegedus, director of Limerick Township Parks and Recreation. “Hopefully you’ll all have a nice holiday season,” she added.

The Spring-Ford High School vocal ensemble offered Christmas music. Young and old enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies, supplied by Acme Food Store, Limerick.

Soon, a Limerick fire truck made its way across the snow-covered parking lot, with Santa Claus himself waving from the back. Santa called the crowd to join him around a tree near the concession stand, and he led the countdown as the lights came on.

The assembly returned to the pavilion, where children were able to tell their Christmas wishes to Santa Claus and have their pictures taken. Santa’s Picture Stop was sponsored by Limerick and Linfield fire companies and Giant Food Store, Upper Providence.

The event also featured a Little Elves workshop, where children cold make glittery snowflake ornaments. The workshop was sponsored by Pennoni Associates Inc. and staffed by volunteers from the Spring-Ford High School girls’ volleyball team.

Additional volunteers included members of Limerick’s Parks and Recreation Committee, the township receptionist and Supervisor Elaine DeWan. About 100 people attended. A collection bin was filled with toys and games for the Toys for Tots program.

“I think it’s going really well,” Hegedus commented, as the crowd milled around the various activities. “It was nice that it snowed earlier to put everybody in the holiday spirit.”
