The annual Easter egg hunt in Spring City offered more than just an opportunity for youngsters to collect candy-filled eggs. A Spring City teenager also collected some valuable leadership experience at the March 15 event.
Tanesha Brightful, a member of Senior Girl Scout Troop 71680, conducted the egg hunt as her leadership project. Troop leader Debbie Diehl explained the project is a precursor to the Gold Award, Girl Scouting’s highest honor, similar to the Eagle Scout of Boy Scouts.
Diehl noted that conducting the egg hunt offered Brightful insight into what is involved in planning a large project, including such aspects as time management.
“I like doing different projects,” Brightful smiled. The egg hunt, she said, “is something we do every year, and it’s a lot of fun.”
Girl Scouts have been involved in the Spring City egg hunt since it began about six years ago, Diehl said.
The girls distributed 100 dozen eggs in the fields around the Spring City Pool on Brown Street. “That’s the fun part,” Brightful said, “and watching the kids. I hope a lot of kids come.”
As the 11 a.m. start time approached on a chilly Saturday morning, dozens of youngsters, from toddlers to 10-year-olds, gathered at their respective sections. A cheerful brown bunny greeted the children and gave the signal for each group to collect their eggs.
After the eggs were all gathered, children eagerly looked through their baskets and bags, looking for a precious piece of paper that would designate a prize egg. The prize baskets, featuring large chocolate bunnies and an assortment of games, crafts and toys, were all made and decorated by the Girl Scouts.
Prize winners included Alexander Locke, Daniel Messer, Hailey Kaba, Matthew Wosczyna Jr., Brianna Staerk, Benjamin Lynch, Sebastian Velazquez, Olivia Riordan and Olivia Grumblatt.
Senior Girl Scout Troop 71680 is open to Linfield and Spring City girls in 10th to 12th grade. Bridget Lightcap, Linfield, is co-leader with Diehl.
