    Royersford Public Library gets creative with summer reading

    Readers of all ages – from birth to adults – are invited to “Be Creative at Royersford Free Public Library" in this year’s summer reading program.

     

    Children from birth to fifth grade are encouraged to “be creative;’ teens in sixth to 12th grades can “express yourself,” and adults over age 18 can “master the art of reading.”

     

    Registration began on June 6, and all ages should register at www.mc-npl.org. Adults should register first, then add members and manage the whole family’s summer reading from their homepage. Participants can keep track online of the minutes they read.

     

    Be Creative participants earn one ticket for each 120 minutes read. The tickets are entered into a final prize drawing to be held Aug. 15, featuring a bike and more.

     

    Express Yourself participants earn a $5 gift card for each 600 minutes read, with a maximum of five cards. Teens may also write reviews for chances to win a $25 Barnes and Noble gift cards.

     

    For adults, every review written earns a chance to win a weekly prize. In addition, random drawings will be held throughout the summer for all registered Royersford participants.

     

    The summer reading program continues through Aug. 14, with a variety of fun programs and activities throughout the summer. The program will kick off on Saturday, June 6, with a program by Piccirillo Science Telling at 10 a.m. and K’NEX workshop for ages 5 to 12 at noon.

     

    Summer story times for ages 2 and 3 are held on Mondays and Tuesdays, 11:15 a.m., with stories, songs, activities and a simple craft. On Tuesdays, lap-sit story times for children birth to 24 months feature rhymes, songs, finger plays and stories. Sessions are offered at 10:15 a.m. Children of any age are invited Mondays and Thursdays, 10:15 a.m. Included are stories and songs.

     

    Special performers will appear at the library on Wednesday mornings at 10:15. The schedule includes Mother Goose on June 10; Eco Man children’s musician, June 17; Tales of the Fairy Queen, to be held at Royersford Elementary School’s gym, June 24; Laugh-aroni, all jokes, July 1; Silly Joe, who sings with a pair of boxers on his head, July 8; Giggle Magic with Marcy, July 15; Mlanjeni Magical Theatre, July 29; Arty Pants Bug Party, Aug. 12, and Flow Circus jugglers, Aug. 12, in the Royersford Elementary School gym.

     

    Makin’ Music with Mr. Dan, a music and movement enrichment workshop for children from birth to age 5, will be offered on Tuesdays, June 16 and 30, July 14 and 28 and Aug. 11, with sessions at 10:15 and 11:15 a.m. Preregistration is required.

     

    Tuesday Night Specials are for children and teens ages 8 to 18, accompanied by an adult. Younger siblings are not permitted. Preregistration is required for the fun and simple activities, which include June 9, ceiling tiles, bring a simple design to paint on a library ceiling tile; June 16, tie dye, bring your own T-shirt, pillow case, bandana or socks made of 100 percent cotton.

     

    Also, June 23, Art and Noshing, creative snacks and art appreciation activities; June 30, fiber arts, God’s eyes, yarn wrapping, simple weaving and pipe cleaners; July 7, Decoupage College, easy tissue paper collage boxes; July 14, Bubble-ology, bubble fun like you’ve never experienced before; July 21, Stars Mars and More, planetarium show, held in Royersford Elementary School’s gymnasium.

     

    And, July 28, Paint Your Partner, face, feet, arms and legs, and they paint you too; Aug. 4, Leaf Prints, print and fame a picture using plants, twigs and paint, and Aug. 11, Interactive Games, everyone wins a prize.

     

    A Thursday Afternoon Art Studio, for ages 5 to 18, will be led by a real artist. Ages 5 to 9 will meet at 1 p.m., and ages 10 to 18, 2:15 p.m. Space is limited and preregistration is required.

     

    Classes included June 18, watercolor painting; June 25, polymer clay; July 2, foil tooling; July 9, collage; July 16, hand building with clay; July 23, paints with textures; July 30, printmaking, and Aug. 13, oil pastels.

     

    An end of summer art show, where participants can exhibit their best artwork from the summer programs, will be held Aug. 18 to 25. Space is limited. Preregistration of entries is required by Aug. 10. Registration forms are at the circulation desk.

     

    A monarch workshop will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 1 p.m. for ages 5 to 9 and at 2:15 for ages 10 to 18. Participants will learn to raise and release monarch butterflies and will be able to take home specimens. Space is limited and preregistration is required.

     

    The 2009 summer reading program at Royersford Free Public Library is sponsored through a grant from the Bard Foundation and the generous support of the Friends of Royersford Library.
