Sly Fox tempts taste buds with varied dishes

Scouting for a place to eat out, we noticed several area restaurants offering special kids’ nights. So on a recent Monday evening, we paid a visit to the Sly Fox on Lewis Road in Royersford.

We were seated promptly, and in no time a smiling waitress was at our table to take our drink orders. She returned quickly with our soft drinks and milk, and we were ready to order our food.

I decided to start my meal with the homemade crab dip with toasted baguettes. The dip was piping hot, and the sauce was delicately flavored so as not to mask the taste of the crab. The portion was generous, plenty enough to share among two or three diners.

Ken opted not to have an appetizer, so he kept Benjamin occupied in the game room during the wait for our food.

At last our dinners arrived, and Benjamin swiftly devoured his old stand-by, a grilled cheese sandwich. (Hopefully as we continue to try different restaurants, he’ll eventually get over his fear of trying new foods, but until then, he’ll get to taste every chef’s grilled cheese sandwich. He declared this one to be “great.”)

Ken chose the build-your-own-burger, topping it with mushrooms. The huge, half-pound burger and large serving of french fries were sufficient to satisfy his hefty appetite, and it all was quite good, he said.

I selected the blackened flat iron steak with onion rings and mushroom gravy. The spicy, tender steak, sliced into manageable strips, was served with seasoned, mashed redskin potatoes and crisp baby green beans. All were delicious, but the portion was way more than I could eat at one meal. In fact, there was enough leftover for Ken to eat for dinner the following night.

Benjamin topped off his meal with the small dish of chocolate ice cream that was included in the price, while I had a piece of apple streusel cheesecake. The cheesecake was very good, although I didn’t really get to eat very much of it. Benjamin thought it was super, and he swiped at least half of it.

All-in-all, the Sly Fox turned out to be a reasonably price, leisurely night out for our family of three.
