The learning never stops in the Spring-Ford School District.
The district’s Community Education program kicked off the fall season with a new round of classes which began the week of Sept. 17. Additional courses are scheduled for later in the fall.
The classes are open to anyone, not just residents of the Spring-Ford School District. Some classes feature a Gold Card discount for senior citizens.
Courses range from one-evening seminars to 11-week classes. Most are held in the 9th Grade Center (the former high school), 400 S. Lewis Rd., Royersford.
Basic Bicycle Repair is offered in two sessions, Oct. 2 and 9 and again Oct. 16 and 23. The three-hour course covers gear and brake adjustments, flat tire repair, chain lubrication and repair, diagnosing problems and easy maintenance tips.
Arts, Crafts and Hobbies still on tap for later this fall include Beginner Sewing, Beginner’s Knitting, Bridge II Play with Others, Hand Smocking Sampler, Smock Sampler Pillow, Smocked Christmas Ornament,; Holiday Topiary, Intermediate One Stroke Painting, Paper Crafting and Williamsburg-Inspired Fruit Wreath,.
Computer courses yet to come include Computers for Seniors, Intermediate Excel and Intermediate Word.
For those who prefer a more active class, dance courses include Intermediate Ballroom Dancing, Country Western Line Dancing II, Latin Dancing, Beginner Tango and Intermediate Tango.
Exercise and sports for the second half of the fall session include Basic Toning, Golf, Kung Fu (Xingyi), Pilates, Pilates Reformer and Self-Defense for Women.
Finance and Legal entries include the ABC’s of Estate Planning, Baby Boomers on the Move, Complete Financial Management, Record Keeping for the Home, Separation and Divorce: Your Rights, So You Want to Go into Business for Yourself and Taking Control: Financial Management for Women.
In the Food category, remaining courses for this fall include Autumn Harvest Tea, Chocolate Making, Chocolate Tasting, Fast Meals for Fast Times, Festive Cake Decorating, Holiday Tea, Hors D’ouevres and Dips and Thai Cooking.
Health and Wellness classes feature Adult and Child CPR, Arthritis: Alternative Approaches to Preventing and Relieving Joint Disease, First Aid, Injury Prevention, Jump-Start the Holiday Season: Increase Your Energy,; Meditation for Beginners, Natural Solutions to Digestive Troubles, Surgery-Free Relief – Carpal Tunnel Syndrome; and Trigger Point Worksho.
Home and Garden offerings include Getting Started Decorating, Cleaning Out Your Clothes Closet, Clear the Clutter from Your Home, Creating a Backyard Habitat, Down-to-Earth Feng Shui, Get Organized for the Holidays, Don’t Panic - Go Organic, The Designer’s Touch: Creating Flow Throughout You Home, We No Longer ‘Kill Bugs Dead’ – Integrated Pest Management, and Organize Your Photos.
Children’s programs include Animal Junction, the Teaching Zoo that Visits You, Babysitting Safety, Everyday Manners, Halloween Cupcake Party, Kids’ Nutritional Pyramid, Food Science, Parent/Grandparent and Child Drawing, Social Eti-Kid, and Tuckers’ Tales Puppet Theatre.
A number of classes are also offered at 422 Sports Plex, Pottstown, including Rookie Baseball, ages 6 to 8; hitting and pitching courses for ages 9 to 12 and for ages 13 to 18; basketball, with lessons and leagues for ages 4 to 6, 5 to 8, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12; field hockey, ages 8 to 12, 10 to 14 and 12 to 17; hockey; soccer, ages 3 to 6, 5 to 6, 7 to 11 and 8 to 14. A course for ages 3 to 6 which is half soccer and half basketball is also available.
Self-improvement classes include 7 Deadly Style Sins, Adult Etiquette, Food Certification, Food Recertification, Getting Paid to Talk, AAA Safe Driving for Mature Drivers and Dream Interpretation.
Also planned are a Spanish class, Brandywine River Kayak Exploration and Kayak the New Jersey Pine Barrens.
Canine classes include Dog Obedience, Dog Agility, and Canine Good Citizen/Therapy Dog International Training.
Spring City/Royersford: Then & Now will be taught by William Brunner, president of the Spring-Ford Historical Society, on Tuesdays, Oct. 9, 16 and 23, 7 to 9 p.m. “Old timers” are invited to “enjoy the memories,” while newer residents are encouraged to learn about their new hometown. Those attending will learn about the rivalries between the two communities, which eventually joined to become today’s Spring-Ford.
The first night will be a classroom lecture with handouts. Night 2 will feature a slide presentation showing Royersford and Spring City, past and present. On the third night, participants will meet at the Spring-Ford Historical Museum for a tour of the museum.
The Community Education program also offers several day trips. A trip to American Music Theatre’s Christmas Show is planned Saturday, Nov. 17, and the Pennsylvania Holiday Show, Harrisburg, Sunday, Dec. 2. Registration deadlines are Oct. 10 and 26, respectively.
Registration may be mailed or dropped off with check (payable to SFASD), money order or credit card information to the Spring-Ford District Office, Community Education Office, 199 Bechtel Road, Collegeville, PA 19426. Phone registrations will be accepted only with credit card payments.
Classes will only run with sufficient enrollment. If too few people sign up for a particular class, it may need to be cancelled.
Most classes are designed for adults over 18.
