The learning never stops in the Spring-Ford School District.
The district’s Community Education program kicked off the spring season with a new round of classes which began in February. Additional courses are scheduled for later in the spring.
The classes are open to anyone, not just residents of the Spring-Ford School District. Some classes feature a Gold Card discount for senior citizens.
Courses range from one-evening seminars to 11-week classes. Most are held in the 9th Grade Center (the former high school), 400 S. Lewis Rd., Royersford.
Among the spring courses is Genealogy on the Internet: How to Successfully Find Your Ancestors. The class will be held April 2 to May 7, in six Wednesday sessions from 7 to 9 p.m. The in-depth course features tips on how to glean all relevant information from the records and how to document them properly.
Other spring courses include a 30-hour driver education course, food certification and recertification,
Among the seminars is Disorganized Children-Frustrated Adults, to be held Tuesday, March 11, 7 to 9 p.m. The workshop is designed for parents and educators who would like to learn how to work peacefully and proactively with children on disorganization. It includes creating practical organizational tools to empower children with learning strategies for lifelong success.
Arts, Crafts and Hobbies still on tap for later this spring include Chainmaille Jewelry, Hand Smocking Sampler, Hand Smocked Easter Egg, Intro to Calligraphy, Mosaic Workshop, Organize Your Photos, One-Stroke Decorative Painting - Beginner and The Next Step, Scrapbook – Year in Review and Wire Wrapping Jewelry.
Computer courses yet to come include Desktop Publishing, Excel 2007 (Beginners to Intermediate) and Word 2007 (Beginner and Intermediate).
For those who prefer a more active class, dance courses include Intermediate Ballroom Dancing, Country Western Line Dancing II, Intro to Tribal Style Bellydance and Intermediate Tribal Style Bellydance and Latin Dancing.
Exercise and sports for the second half of the spring session include Aero-Flex, Core Balance – Stability Ball I, Core Flex Workout, Golf, Pilates Power Mat, Self-Defense for Women, Train for a Spring 5K, Yoga Connection and Yoga for Adults.
Finance and Legal entries include Buying Your First Home, Complete Financial Management, IRA Distribution Planning and Extending Your Legacy, So You Want to Go into Business for Yourself and Structured Investing in an Unstructured World.
In the Food category, remaining courses for this spring include Fabulously Easy Desserts, Fast Meals for Fast Times, Basic Cake Decorating, Indian Cuisine and Spring Fling Tea.
Health and Wellness classes feature Adult and Child CPR; Allergies Line to Asthma; Diet and Weight Loss; First Aid; Good Food? Bad Food? How to Read Labels; How to Sit, Stand, Sleep Your Way to a Healthier Spine; Kids and Chiropractic, and What You Should Know About Long-term Care.
Home and Garden offerings include Ask the Decorator; Choosing Color for Your Home, Design to Sell and Jump Start Spring De-cluttering.
Children’s programs include Candy Making, Dining Eit-Kid, Drama Kids International, Everyday Manners, Golf, Cupcake Party, Mealtime Manners, Parent/Grandparent and Child Drawing, Social Eti-Kid, Tuckers’ Tales Puppet Theatre and Yoga for Kids.
A number of classes and leagues are also offered at 422 Sports Plex, Pottstown, including basketball for ages 4 to 6, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12, with a league for ages 5 to 8; field hockey, ages 8 to 12 and 10 to 14; soccer, goalkeeping clinic for ages 8 to 14, league for ages 5 to 6, and class, ages 7 to 11 and inline hockey. Adult leagues are offered in basketball, inline hockey and soccer.
The 422 Sports Plex features school day-off activities for ages 6 to 12 during spring vacation. Children will learn and play sports that may include flag football, soccer, waffle ball, volleyball, basketball, kickball, team handball and others.
Self-improvement classes include Adult Dining Etiquette (teens welcome), Communicating with Teen Drivers, Getting Paid to Talk, Parents and Children: Redefining the Family after Divorce, AAA Safe Driving for Mature Drivers and Dream Interpretation.
Also planned are an Introduction to Fly Fishing, Basic Bicycle Repair, The Paranormal and the Quantum Connection, Brandywine Kayak, Evening Canoe Trip, Pine Barrens Kayak and Sassafras Kayak.
Canine classes include Dog Obedience, Dog Agility, and Canine Good Citizen/Therapy Dog International Training.
Spring City/Royersford: Then & Now will be taught by William Brunner, president of the Spring-Ford Historical Society, on Tuesdays, April 1 to 15, 7 to 9 p.m. “Old timers” are invited to “enjoy the memories,” while newer residents are encouraged to learn about their new hometown. Those attending will learn about the rivalries between the two communities, which eventually joined to become today’s Spring-Ford.
The first night will be a classroom lecture with handouts. Night 2 will feature a slide presentation showing Royersford and Spring City, past and present. On the third night, participants will meet at the Spring-Ford Historical Museum for a tour of the museum.
The Community Education program also offers a bus trip to New York City on Saturday, May 3.
Registration may be mailed or dropped off with check (payable to SFASD), money order or credit card information to the Spring-Ford District Office, Community Education Office, 199 Bechtel Road, Collegeville, PA 19426. Phone registrations will be accepted only with credit card payments.
Classes will only run with sufficient enrollment. If too few people sign up for a particular class, it may need to be cancelled.
Most classes are designed for adults over 18.
