Spring-Ford Intermediate School celebrated its own stars – those who read the most in the annual “Reading Rocks” incentive – during the school’s recent “Spring-Ford Idol” assembly.
The musical event was the culminating activity for the Reading Rocks reading incentive. For six weeks, Spring-Ford’s fifth- and sixth-graders were encouraged to read at home and keep track of how many pages they read on a calendar. Students who logged more than 300 pages were invited to participate in the “Spring-Ford Idol” competition.
The students didn’t have to worry about being judged by a panel with the likes of Simon Cowell, however. The event was simply a fun, laid-back celebration of the students’ reading accomplishments, according to reading specialist Wendy Taylor.
“The annual ‘Spring-Ford Idol’ assembly isn’t so much a competition as a way to honor the students who have demonstrated their commitment to reading,” Taylor said. “It’s our hope that the celebration will inspire and encourage kids to continue reading during their free time.”
In addition to student performances, students were surprised by guest performances by teachers and Principal Bill Marion, who is retiring this year.
