Community Music School in Trappe announces a star-filled second season for its A Little Night Music concert series. The first concert on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 8 p.m. will feature cellist Alan Stepansky. All concerts are held in the school’s 200-seat Ingrid Larsen Evans Hall at 775 W. Main St., Trappe.
Stepansky, who grew up in Trappe, is recognized as one of the most gifted and versatile cellists of his generation. After a distinguished orchestral career that included playing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, serving as principal cellist of the Boston Pops and culminating in a nine-year tenure as associate principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic, he continues to be in demand as a soloist, chamber musician and recording artist.
Stepansky is currently head of the cello department at Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, a founding faculty member of the ground-breaking graduate program in orchestral performance at the Manhattan School of Music, and is the cello faculty artist of the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, CA. Accompanied by Helene Jeanney, Stepansky’s program will include works by Bach, de Falla, Virizlay and Chopin.
In February, the A Little Night Music series brings David Kim, concert master of the Philadelphia Orchestra to the area. His solo recital program will include the world premiere performance of several hymn tunes arranged especially for Kim by Philadelphia composer Kile Smith.
Two rising stars from roster of Astral Artists, soprano Díesella Làrusdóttir and pianist Andrius Zlabys will also be featured this season. Làrusdóttir, a national finalist in the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions will perform works by Purcell, Bellini, Strauss and Rachmaninoff. Pianist Andrius Zlabys will be joined by quartet of notable string players to present a program that will include two world premieres – a piano quartet by Yevgeniy Sharlat and a piano quintet by Luis Prado.
Two of the six concerts will highlight members of Community Music School’s own highly talented faculty.
In addition to beautiful music, concert-goers can enjoy beautiful works of art by area artists. A new exhibit will open in the Gallery at CMS with each concert. Artists include Neil Dreibelbis, Tim Swartz, Dot Bunn and Tim Wadsworth. The final exhibit will feature quilts by the Variable Star Quilters.
General admission tickets for all concerts can be reserved in advance by calling 610-489-3676. Individual tickets are priced at $16 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Full subscriptions can be purchased for as little as $66 for seniors and students or $84 for adults.
The Little Night Music concert series is partially supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and by the Target Foundation. Community Music School is a non-profit school of music providing music instruction to individuals of all ages and levels of ability without regard to their personal background or ability to pay.
